I have a 1977 460 that is going in my bronco as soon as the mount get to my door. I was wondering if this motor would benefit from a new timing chain, like a summit roller timing chain? Would it give this motor better performance? would it be worth the 50$? I would have to get new timing cover and water pump gaskets right? Or just use gasket maker? There arent any special tools needed right?
First get a pre 72 timing set to get the 8 deg. of retardation out of the cam that will help on power. Put on new gaskets for safety sake. Prob. need a good puller.
You'll need a puller to remove the balancer and possibly the lower timing gear(from the crank) As mentioned before, get the pre 72 (68-71) timing set. I believe parts stores sell gasket sets just for replacing the timing chain, so those are the only gaskets you will need.
Thanks for the info guys, I ordered the chain set and new gaskets. I ordered the 68-71 timing set for a 429 because my local parts store couldnt get any for a 460, will have it done tomorrow. Thanks.
Hey c_rossman, where did you get your info? I checked the Ford mototsport tech line they said my 97 460 was retarded but Im not sure those guys were 100% on that. I would be interested in finding out for sure.

How did you know that it was stright up did you degree the cam? Also what year is your truck ? Was it a double roller chain?
I havent been able to get too many answers about the fuel injected 460 internals thats why all the questions.

My truck is a 93, It was over a year ago, but I used a protractor to double check the timing. I believe the dowel pin is perpendicular to the mark on the timing gear.It was a double roller chain. The only reason Ford used a retarded timing set is for emissions, And EFI fixed this problem so the put the timing straight up.
I changed out my timing chain to the pre-72 Fifteen years ago and I have been through seven smog checks with no problems. The emissions always pass, sometimes I get hassled over the plumbing.

I hate to jump in here and ask something on a thread that's not mine but I was also thinking of having a pre 71 timing chain and possibly a cam in my 86 250 with a 460 in the future. How involved is it to replace? Is it necessary to pull the engine to perform this or just the radiator? Forgive my ignorance, I am still learning
