I had a vision: A 1965 Mustang 4x4 with a 6 inch lift and 35's
Can anyone tell me where I can find information on how to convert my 1965 Mustang to 4x4? I am thinking about taking a chassis that is already 4x4 and just swapping the bodies. Will that work? What chassis should I start with? I could get a 1983 chevy 1/2 ton 4x4 that has a new engine and transmission, would that work as a good starting point? Or would a Bronco chassis work better? Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated. My friends and my brother are looking for an interesting project to do that hasn't already been done down here in our area. Thanks.
You might look into the Monster Garage show where they built up the "Slingray"....they converted a vette to 4wd.....but they made the t-case....you might buy one.
Do you think the front end off of a 1987 Jeep Comanche 4x4 would work? How much fabrication would that consist of? The vette on Monster Garage was all time 4x4 because they made a custom driveshaft and welded sprockets on it for a chain driven front driveshaft. Anybody else have any ideas?
Yeah I know it was full time 4wd.....that axle off the jeep was probably a 44, it should be plenty strong. I think it was coil sprung too, that will require a lot of work on your part.
The Spitfire in that link is awesome. I think the 4x4 car things is cool but the problem is so many people do it half assed and it looks like crap when they're done. A lot of those cars have a ton of frame showing. If you just do a simple swap of a body onto a 4x4 frame it won't take too much work but to make it look good there's a lot involved.
The Mustang has unibody construction - the frame and body are one piece - they do not come apart without some pretty big fabrication. Not un-doable but it won't be as easy as just drilling holes in a 4wd frame for the body mount bolts.
