wow, this is puzzling indeed. Whelp, last resort is to take a long peice of 3/4" or so rubber hose, about 2-3 feet long and put one end to your ear and the other end at varoius parts of the engine until you hear it at its strong source (of course with the engine running; be careful). You say its a metallic sound? Check around your exhuast manifolds for cracks/leaks too. man, running out of ideas on this Good luck, and let us know what you find.
P.S. They removed signitures from everyone but admins and club members.
Well, I can't hear it...my computer is being stupid at the moment... But from what I've gathered, it's a buzzing sound. Check the emission air pump line going to the exhaust (just upstream of the cat. converter). Mine went bad and made an obnoxious buzzing sound
crap... i got aboslutly nowhere with the listen with hose thing i cant figure out where the hell its coming from
i dont know if any of you saw the post a whille back but i was getting <I> DTC 411 Cannot control RPM during KOER self-test low RPM check. <I> after haveing some trouble finding the problem: found solution, pcv valve was allowing to much air pass thro causing sort of a vacuum leak, code went away, today came back, decided to look at the tb gasket (it never being changed (tsb on em) found half of it had been sucked in, amazed by why ford would think such a tiny gasket would ever function properly neyway decided a lil silicone would be just fine for now, code went away, truck drives better
would i still pass emisions if i removed smog(air) pump?
i cant find ney dam underdrive pullys for this engine, help?
how would i install an aftermarket tach?
AND...
WHAT THE HELL IS THIS INFERNAL NOISE COMING FROM!!!
Wont help with the noise problem search, but I Do know that when the Power Steering sound goes away, the truck get's REAL HARD to steer, and a funny looking mess goes all over the right side of the engine bay! Just log that in the memory banks as useless trivia!!
i had a phantom altenator grinding/winning noise i couldn't tell witch accessory was making the noise try this take off all of the belts and turn all the pullys by hand and feal, see, and hear if they spin freely or rough
Wow speedwheeler you really dug this one up, thanks for the tip although I don't have a tach yet but I did find instructions for instaling one, took a trip to visit an old family friend this weekend, he looked at it said it might be the belt tensioner if it is I'm giving every mechanic I saw a good kick
I had a buzzing like that.At idle only.Turned out to be a valve in the tranny.Took it to the tranny shop and they pulled the valve and put in a new shift kit.Still get a little buzz from the loose fitting valve slide area.Shop said to be expected with that type of repair.Get under truck while it is running.Take a hillbilly stethoscope"piece of hose" and feel your tranny pan.Listen through the hose on your tranny pan.
Tap on the exhaust with a rubber mallet, try it with the engine off, the " stuff inside the catalyst may be breaking apart.
If you can hear loose particles bouncing inside cat this may be your noise.Might even be a loose heat shield.
If not, then take off your drive belt and spin each and every thing that turns with the belt, all the pulleys should turn smoothly, if anyone feels lumpy or bumpy then this could be your noise. Also grab each component and try to shake to see if its mountings are loose or broken, also a source of noise. If the the fan has alot of wooble and movement or if your can see the water pump pulley has alot wooble in it your water pump may be going bad. This is a process of elimation till you find the noise. It can take quite sometime to hunt this down. This is why mechanics sometime charge so much for there time.
I also have an intresting noise. It is almost a high pitched whistle when i turn the truck off. It sounds a little like a tea kettle, only at the begining lower octive. Not sure what it is, and its been doing it as long as I can remember. Anyone who has an idea would bring me great happiness. Its getting annoying, and gets me weird looks in parking lots.
This kind of noise is usually cause by refrigerant gas lossing pressure at evaporator, this is a continuous noise while engine is running but it can't not be hear by engine noise, so that's the reason you can hear it just after stop engine.
NOTE: it can not be hear in all car/trucks but you can test it stoping engine while A/C was previouslly turned off.
All I could tell you in to get a mechanics stethoscope and start probing they work great. I had this squeal coming from somewhere in the engine bay, and the mechanics stethoscope pin pointed it to my alternator. One of the brushes broke and started cutting into the rotor shaft, now that precise. They're a very good investment, pay for themselves many times over. Here's what one looks like, or where you can buy one if you want. Tell'em Buddha sent ya!!
