Yeah, mine are the same. The pads don't seem to cover the full width of the rotor. I don't think that this is especially a problem, but I agree it doesn't look very good.

Rust on Rotors

I am in Northern VA, and have the same problem. Have about 40k miles on them. It appears that the rust is creeping in from the ends, but I can't figure out why the pads aren't cleaning it up. If either of you have figured this out, please reply with the solution. Thanks!

Bein' that their cast iron, they are going to rust everywhere the pad doesn't sweep and if you put it away wet they will rust right before your eyes even where the pad sweeps. Pull them off, wirebrush them and paint them with vht if you don't like the rust. The pads will wear the vht off in a few stops and you'll have rear brakes again and no unsightly rust.

Geez, didn't you put mag wheels on your car in high school and realize the brakes are ugly? Check out Porsche and Nissan--they are aware of the need for attractive brakes behind alloy spoked wheels. Theirs are all pretty, painted and even have the name on them. Brakes to behold, so to speak.

Thanks. I just checked them a little closer, and it seems the inner side of the disc is wearing clear out to the end of the disc. So I imagine these are floating calipers where the inside is pushing instead of both sides actually squeezing (please correct me if I'm wrong). And at the risk of sounding like an idiot, what is vht? Thanks!

By float I think you mean there are pistons on only one side of the disc. The way the brake is made the pistons push one pad into the disc and by means of the connection to the other side, pull the others and/or in turn push the disc into them. The pads on both sides should be contacting the disc with equal pressure. I would think the pads would be almost exactly aligned, so they would grip the disc in exactly the same area on both sides. Any reason to believe they are not installed correctly? Rapid wear, poor braking, noise? Or just a diff in the rust belt on each side?

VHT is high temp paint. I was kind of kidding about painting the discs, although painting the hub part and outer rim would reduce the uglyness of rust everywhere.
