i've read some post about disconnecting the line that goes to the wastegate to gain some boost????? The way that i understand it the gate will still force itself open before any damage will occur. Is this a safe and effective mod? where will isee the benefits?
The wastegate on the psd's starts to open at 5psi of boost. Cookie88 over in the 7.3 section can tell you more. He's had his disconnected forever along with about a million other mods. I don't think it will hurt your pistons. All you do is build boost sooner because it won't be able to bleed boost through the wastegate. I know guys pulling like 30 psi of boost with a stock turbo and theirs seem ok. Simply disabling the wastegate won't do nearly that much for you so I think you'll be alright.
High exhaust gas temp is what hurts your aluminum pistons not boost. Diesel's don't really detonate so overboost isn't really a problem with something this minor. Slapping a predator in your psd without an egt guage and driving it WFO will get you holes in your pistons or a wasted turbo faster than anything you can do to your wastegate.
Just my .02
PS you should really post 7.3 diesel specific questions in the 7.3 powerstroke forum. You'll get lots of answers there as the forum is dedicated to the engine and mods for it and things like that.
Also if you do a search for "wastegate" and specify the 7.3 forum and set your search time for the last 6 months you should get all you ever need to read about the mod.
