Just had another problem with the COPs. This time it's on my 2001 SuperCrew with a 5.4 (77k miles). I just bought it a couple of months back when my two-week-owned 2000 F-150 lost two COPs (5.4 liter)) and later that week burned up in a fire.
My V-10 lost one COP at 168k, (who can complain after that many miles?)
I also have a 2003 SD with a 5.4...9k so far and no problems. Is this a weak link in the Ford Triton?
cop's usually go bad because of constant moisture or heat .
The moisture can be from a number of things
People cleaning their engine an not blowing it off with compressed air around the sparkplugs.
A leaking heater hose on pass side drips right on the farthest one back on that side.
The part about the moisture and washing off the motor concerns me. I want to wash off my 2003, it's looking just a little dirty. No oil or stuff, just good ol' California desert dirt.
I take it, then there are no seals around these COPs.
Heat? Hmmm that is a problem here only after spring, we get into the 100 degrees a few times. Rain is sparse, humidity is nil.
Moisture is the culprit, this I do believe and suspected that. The question is how did it get there? Like you said blowing off the motor with air is an excellent suggestion. Thanks a lot for that one.
I would guess using low pressure is preferred to high pressure when it comes to washing off the engine. On my Honda Civic I use 'Engine Brite' so as not too need a pressure washer.
