I have an 81 f150 with a carburated 300 I-6. The problem I am having is that the power it has varies from day to day. On some days I think it may very well have a 460 under the hood, while on other days it has about as much power as a toaster. Is there any way to get the power to go up and stay up consistantly?
Sorry, I couldn't resist!
It sounds as though something it holding back the distributor vacuum or mechanical advance intermittantly.
Pull the dist. cap off, grasp the rotor and try to turn it. It should turn about 20 degrees and you should feel spring tension while doing this. ( this is the mechanical )
Remove the hose from the vacuum diaphragm, connect another hose to it and suck on it. You should observe movement inside the distributor. (vacuum advance)
Check all the vacuum hoses for cracks and proper fitment.
Check to make sure they are correctly plumbed.
Check coil and cap for carbon arcing.
Check the integrity of all plug wires.
Check the air filter, warm air door operation and hose.
Does it need a tune-up?
Check timing
