So i finish installing my mud flaps and the truck won't start!
So i check battery(good) clean all connections, then i crawl under the Mighty 5.4l to see why the starter is not turning or making any noise.I take off the plastic cover and clean 6lbs of KA-KA.
Off with the large posetive cable and clean all contact points.Put it together and still nothing? i leave the key on and grab a screw driver and jump the big cable to the little wire and voila , she fires.
Now i drove her home and parked her in the garage.Everything is good by the gauges all the way home. After i parked her i tried to fire her and nothing.
Whats wrong?Starter junk?I'm going to clean the little wire on the starter and see if that will help. Why can i jump her but she won't go by turning the key?
Naw,really. What do you guys think is wrong with her? I hate not having everything in running order. It will probably get me out of bed early, just to get on it in the morning.
The older F2's and 3's have the starter solenoid mounted on the passenger side fender near the battery. My 2003 1/2 has an integrated starter solenoid mounted on the starter itself, no signal terminal. In either case, there's a large diameter wire (negative terminal at 3 o'clock position on the old fender solenoid) and a smaller wire (positive terminal, 9 o'clock position on the old fender solenoid.) on older fender mounted solenoid, there's a third small wire which is the signal terminal at the 12 o'clock position. If there is no voltage at the positive terminal (and at the signal terminal on old solenoids) when you turn the key to "start" then you may have a blown fusible link. Check the wire coming out of the fuse box and see what could have caused it to blow, like frayed wire. If there is voltage at either the positive or signal terminals, then the starter solenoid is defective.
You must have put a screw through a wire and blew a fuse. Check behind the wheel well underneath the cab for a stored wire..Look at fuses under the hood.
How long were the screws that you used to install the mud flaps?. Also...It's a 2002...can't be that much junk on the battery terminals unless you have a serious charging system problem. BTW my sig is dead too
Check the starter relay at position 307 (on my 2003) first. There's also a fuse at position 113, 30 Amp for the starting circuit. (Again, I reference my 2003, the fuse positions could be different on your 2002, but the manual should tell you.) Since it's an auto transmission, the starter signal goes throught the CPP (Clutch Pedal Position) which should be shunted on yours (inop) and the DTR (Digital Transmission Range sensor, Fuse location 31). That only allows the starter relay to operate when the transmission is in P or N. It could be that there is a problem with the DTR. Check the ignition feed that operate the run/start at position 45, that should be fine since it runs after you short it but check anyway.
I checked all the fuses and relays, inside the truck and everything is ok. Still can only get truck to start by shorting the starter and solenoid.. Man i hate it!
What am'i overlooking?
I'm going to yank the starter and the solenoid that piggybacks on it off tomorrow. Can't think of anything else.
