I have an 88 F150 that I would like to convert to an automatic. I use this truck to tow a 3200 pound racecar on a 1500 pound trailer so an AOD is out of the question. Does anyone know what it would take to put an E4OD in this truck? What do I have to worry about besides controling the OD and lockup converter?
Tranny swap is not difficult but what about electronics??? you'll need a computer to control E4OD. If your actual engine is EFI you can obtain from a Ford dealer a chip upgrade and some extra wiring harnes.
It's got fuel injection. Ford put the E4od in the 89 trucks, I wonder if it would be as easy as changing the ECM and wiring harness or is it more complicated than that. Taking out the 5spd and installing the E4od is the easy part.
And after all that is done, the first time you need to rebuild it, you will regret not spending less money and getting a C6 with a gear vendor OD unit behind it!
Lets do some math, shall we?
The cost to install a 4 speed auto E4OD = the cost of the trans and what ever a new computer costs as well as the rewiring of the truck to hook it up???? = Too damn much!!!!
Rebuild my E4OD for me? = $2000 to $4000?
And dont forget that one minor electrical problem can ghost that trans!
The cost to install a 6 speed auto C6+gear Vendor OD? = the cost of the trans and the OD unit, and save all the money a new computer costs as well as the rewiring of the truck to hook it up????
Build me a C6 to handle 500+ HP? = $600 to $800?
Rebuild my C6 for me? = $300 to $400?
And add a Gear Vendor OD unit to my C6 and make it a 6 speed auto trans? = $2000?
The C6 and a gear Vendor will beat an E4OD under ANY conditions, towing load or financial!
I rebuilt them for 4 years at a dealership and will never have one in any truck I own, ever!
