Cooler Tubes

I am faced with yet another case of leaking cooler tubes. I'm out of warranty now and want to make the fix myself. Is there any reason why I shouldn't reuse the tubes and only replace the sleeves?

Are you talking about the turbo tubes and if so how bad are they leaking? Some oily buildup between oil changes is normal. I just wipe em down when I change oil.

They're leaking pretty bad. The sleeve at the top of the hot side has a hole in it. Looks like it may have come in contact with the plastic cover over the gas filter housing. It's blowing oil on the top of the engine.

If the metal tube is not damaged, I dont see why you couldn't replace just the rubber sleeves.

That's what I'm hoping. When Ford replaced them under warranty, they replaced the tubes and all. I thought that was a little strange.

Ther shouldn't be any reason to change the tubes or the boots. Just clean them up and reuse them.

As long as the crankcase is venting into the intake they will always oil up and leak, so you might as well save the money. That, or reroute the crankcase vent.

Well I at least have to replace the one with the hole. Doesn't the crankcase need to vent there? I thought the oil was in there for a reason.

Well yeah, replacing the busted one is a good idea.

The crankcase vents into the intake to satisfy the EPA and nothing more. After enough years go by you will lose a good amount of intercooler efficiency do to the oil build up, but thats not something you'll need to worry about for a long time.

I thought I read somewhere that the oil acts as a lube for the turbo. According to your statement it is only an EPA requirement. If that's the case, give me some pointers on rerouting it to prevent the oil leaks in the future. Thanks.

Mine is vented to atmosphere. Nearly every big truck for the last 50 years has a "road tube", or "draft tube" which does the exact same thing as my set up.

The conversion is as simple as reversing the CCV on the drivers side valvecover (si that it faces rearward), installing a 5/8" heater hose patch sleeve, and running about 10 feet of 5/8" hose down the side of the motor and down the frame. Look in my picture in your exhaust thread and you can see the hose running up over the master cylinder (behind the brake reservoir).

Several people have not been comfortable with the idea of an atmospheric vent and have constructed all sorts of gadgets to filter the air before plumbing it back into the intake. Try a search on CCV mod, or just crankcase vent.

Hey Lagerhead, thanks for the link. Looks like a great alternative to the Ford dealer.
