390, C6, convertor?

Well, I've put radiator, headers and carb on hold.
Tranny is finally gonna get overhaul'd.
Doesn't like to go into gear, and then slips badly. Lucas fixed it for a bit, but the gremlins have returned.

truck is a daily driver, is gonna do landscaping duty around the house, and haul my mustanf to the track and back... ~5000lbs.

what would be a good convertor?
i was thinking 2200 stall, and lock up style.

I scan'd the tranny and towing forums, but seems mostly new rig folks in there...

TIA

I'd stay with a mostly stock style convertor. They even make some designed for towing.

I wouldn't go with any higher stall than stock unless I was running a mostly strip machine. but, that's just my opinion. I'm spending quite a bit to get my truck faster at the strip, but the TC will only get changed to a higher stall if I decide this is just a track project. For now, It's still supposed to be my "Truck".

Ya, I hear you, mine will always be a 'truck', I have my Mustang for 1/4 mile play.

what is stock stall?
i don't want to be 'on the convertor' all the time, that's for sure.

Did you try adjusting the intermediate band? 90% of the time a slipping transmission will be caused by this.

-Insert Opinion-
Get the lucas out of there. You dont want anything slipperier than Type-F in your transmission. I'd change it and put straight Type-F in it after adjusting the intermediate band.
-End Opinion-

I find that my stock converter stalls at about 1800rpm at WOT behind my 360, and it's stock. I think that's plenty.

Not tried the band adjustmant, but, it also has massive lag going into gear, which means the seals are shot, so, it's time to freshen it up.

Turns out Hughes Convertors is just down the street from the office here, and you can buy direct from them.
They reccomend their tow-master convertor... guess what... stalls at 1800 behind a mild big block.
12" jobbie as well... they have them sitting on the shelf...

Friend who races a low 10 second Mustang w/ C4 is trying to hook me up with a decent price on a TCI...

Automatics are confusing.

Thanks guys.

I'd just use the stock converter. Why spend the extra money?

Um, dont you already have one?

You can probably pick one up at the junkyard for about $30.

I'm aware I have a stock convertor, but, my guess is that it's as old as the hills, and... do those things last forever?

When I rebuilt the motor, the sludge and rusty water that ran out of it has me scared of what I might find in the tranny. Not to mention 6 of 8 cylinders with broken rings, 1 small port head and 1 large port head, cam retainer plate on backwards etc etc...

The tranny is slipping, and it shudders under full throttle, I 'doubt' there is much in there worth salvage?
If I'm not mistaken, convertors wear out?
How much is a new, stock replacement convertor?

Anything I've bought used in this part of the world has turned out to be a huge POS.

On top of that, having the tranny out of the truck is not my idea of a day of bliss, so, I'm not sure I want to thro in a junkyard'd unknown just to pull the tranny again, and possibly again...
For some that may be a hobby. For me working on the truck is fun, but not over and over and over.

I'm by no means rich, but fixing things with parts of unknown history is a risk I'd rather not take. I much prefer mtn biking, frisbee with the dog, hanging out with my fiancee, hiking, yard maintiance, etc to layin under the truck fix'n what was meant to be fix'd last time I was under the truck.

Don't mean to offend.

Sure. Makes sense to me. I just told you how I would have done it. Your method does make sense to remove all doubt about parts.

I'd recommend you go to Napa, autozone, or the like. I have no idea how much you'll pay. Just go to various places and compare prices.

Usually stock converters dont wear out unless something is out of balance in the engine, or the flywheel explodes or something. Your stock converter is most likely ok, but since you said the transmission shudders you're probably right to replace it. Small particles from a troubled transmission can cause problems with the converter.

Good luck.

TCs can go out. some of the fins in side can lay down after years of work and therefore not doing their job. reusing an old TC is not a good idea because any thing left in the TC (ie. dirt metal shaving or mucky trans fluid that has baked in there.) will make its way into your new/rebuilt trans. i found this out the hard way of course. just rebuilt my 390 and bought a trans got everything right and drove er around a bit went out there the next day started er up again and she wouldnt go in revers.

cripe gunnabebad... I could have sworn that said Fisherman User under you name by the way you type'd!!

Thanks for sharing your hands on experience!
Autozone lists a reman'd unit for 79 bux... for the extra 100bux in the difference of cost, I think I'll go with a new unit... I mean, she costs me that much every month in gas alone... that's not bad peace of mind a months gas...
