What rear end?

I bought a 1988 F-150 4x4. It originally had a limited slip rear end but the guy I bought it from said the rear end had been changed. Both rear wheels spin full-time. Does anybody know what rear end this could be?

full time as in they chatter going around corners or full time as in if you jack it up and spin the tires they both go the same way? If it's the previous it either has a spool or a locker. if the latter, by they don't chatter, then you have an LS. If it has a locker it'll unlock if you get off of the gas and stop chattering in a turn. If it's a spool they'll catter around a turn no matter what.

When the truck is jacked up the wheels spin in oposite directions. What do you mean by chatter around corners?

If it's jacked up and the wheels spin in opposite directions then you have just a regular open differential.

If you need to ask about chattering around corners, then it doesn't do it.

When going around a corner at low speeds does the truck buck and rattle and sound like it's dragging a tire? (it won't since you have an open diff)

When I told my dad that it is an open differential he argued with me and said that it is straight posi. We jacked my truck up and spun the back tire. When it is in park they spin opposite directions but when in neutral they spin the same way. The rearend pushes the truck straight when going around corners. I have never heard of straight posi. Do you know what it is?

What you have is NOT a posi. "Positraction" is a GM trademark; please don't use that sort of language to describe a Ford. What you have sounds like it's a very worn limited slip differential which Ford calls a "Trac-Lok." If the clutches were in good shape you would not be able to turn the wheels by hand with the tranny in park. They still have enough bite to lock the axles together when the tranny is in neutral.

I got my great uncle who is a mechanic at Ford to look at my truck tonight. He also said that it is straight posi. He even used the term posi and said that there is nothing else to call it. It is not traction-lok because both wheels always spin.

A Ford Trac-Lok is NOT a locker. It is a limited slip differential, similar in design to a GM Positraction. Your uncle may call it whatever he chooses, but the fact remains that "Positraction" is a GM trademark and should NEVER be used to describe a Ford.

Second that. Positraction is a GM term. Trac-lok is a Ford term. Both refer to the same idea, which is a limited slip carrier.
