Being a young male driver, I know it is inherently possible that I will get into an accident(so the insurance company thinks ). Why?? Just because the "national average" says that young male teen drivers are more likely to get into accidents doesnt mean I will!! Seeing as how the cost is $250 fer 6 mths, that isnt bad for now. Once I am "on the insurance" the price will go up. Considering most young drivers dont have a job, how will they pay for the cost !?! Having mommy and daddy pay for it all doesnt seem right to me. I pay for what they cant. Anyone else share my views??
Yeh Marc150, insurance companies live off of statistics and averages. And whether you are a good driver or not, your peers have skewed the stats to the point where insurance companies are not willing to take the risk without high rates.
Keep your record clean - no accident claims or moving violations and just think, when you are 25 your rates will go down. Of course you can get married and/or have a child and your rates will also go down. Married teens with children seem to be safer drivers - go figure!
And you know what? It also impacts the premiums of us older drivers. The more claims against a company the more the rates increase - regardless what age the claim is against. Enough claims will impact all those insured!
Being 19 I know your position. I care more about my driving than most, I've been to a professional driving school and taken steps of my own to get a feel for how my truck will react in situations and how to keep it under control. I've been in 3 accidents where every one had atleast 1 vehicle that was totalled. You will get in an accident even though you might think you're a good driver. Everyone thinks their a good driver, but experience is what it takes as well as being a good defensive driver. One accident was sort of my fault, and the other two were not. The first I rear ended someone going downhill on a bridge in the snow, totalled a 99 ranger. Second one I was taking a left turn on green arrow and the guy comin the other way ran the red and T-boned me at 50 mph, totalled my truck and his. Last accident was an old lady who decided to make her left turn across traffic when I was coming right at her, smoked her car and bumped into a car on the right. The second one I probably could have missed if I was a more experienced/defensive driver. Doesn't help that he was going 70-80 mph in a 40 and he looked like he was so far away when I started to make the turn that he'd never miss the light, he was 17.
