Angry 1997 Explorer downshifting noise

My 1997 automatic Explorer XLT is acting funny. When reducing speed (coming towards a stop) I can hear a noise and "feel" movement coming from the rear of the vehicle. It only happens when the vehicle is downshifting. Any idea what could be causing this? It drives fine otherwise but it just has me a little concerned. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Didja check the trans fluid and rear axle oil? How long since the trans fluid was changed?

The trans fluid is fine but I have not checked the rear axle oil. This may be a stupid question but how do I go about checking the rear axle oil? Thanks for the reply!

If it's like mine, there's a fill plug on the forward driver's side of the diff case. Takes a 3/8 square drive, I think. The oil level should be close to the level of the plug. If there aren't any leaks, it's probably not low, but it couldn't hurt to check the condition of the oil. Don't know about the 97, but for the 96, Ford says to change that oil at 100K miles.
Oh, yeah, I think the plug is magnetic, so check that for particles.
