Question Exhaust & Muffler

Hey folks, I have a '01 F-150 XLT 4wd and people have been telling me about exhaust and mufflers.
I've basically come to the conclusion that I will get more power, and better gas mileage if i get a better exhaust system. I was thinking Flowmaster with a 3" pipe out the side. I don't want the truck to **** the neighbors off or be too loud inside. So I was thinking A Flowmaster Delta Flow 50.

If anyone has any ideas, suggestions or can just set me straight on a few things it would be very much appreciated.

Check out a Borla system, if you don't what a loud exhaust. A complete Borla system is pricy, but it's all stainless steel and high quality. It will be pretty quiet, untill you step on the gas hard, then you get a nice deep rumble. I only changed out the muffler and put the tips out the side in front of the rear tire (see my gallery). But if you want that loud roar in the exhaust, go with the flowmaster.

Hi and welcome to the forum

You will gain a little power and mileage. Not a huge amount, but some. I have the Flowmaster 40 series 3" in, dual 2.5" outlets exiting the rear of the truck. It sounds great but isn't overly loud.

I have a '98 F-150 with the 4.6L V8. I bought a Flowmaster 50 delta flow, and just kept everything else stock. Same single 2.5" pipe out the side and everything. It's only slightly louder at idle and at highway speeds, but you can hear it when you take off or put your foot in it, but even then it's not overly-loud. As far as better gas mileage, I haven't run a full tank through yet with the new muffler, so I'll have to wait and see, but I'm not expecting much improvement.

Hey,

If you get an exhaust system, you mainly do this for sound. You can get only a very small amount of horsepower and gas mileage from an exhaust if any. Sometimes you actually can lose gas mileage and power. This all depends on the exhaust you get and how well it gets installed.

To get better gas mileage and better performance from an exhaust, you have to get high-flow catalytic converters or remove them and put O2 sensors in place. (Removing catalytic converters are illegal). High-flow cats are very $$$.

If you choose to just do a cat-back system (cat-back means not messing with the catalytic converters) you should get an intake to work with your exhaust. I will agree that a cat-back and intake will improve gas and power at a showing amount.

So if you are looking for gas + power with only a cat-back you will not notice it. The intake works with the exhaust and both will need to be done.

Sounds to me your not into the sound. There are many mufflers out there that are quite that will help improve performance + gas when installed with an intake. Flowmaster are a good system at a good price. Just make sure if you bolt it on to check for air leaks, and if someone welds it on check for air leaks. This will cause loss of power and loss of gas.

I hope this helps you out and good luck.
