Angry Interior Light problme

I have a 1999 Ford Ranger XLT 4WD.

When you open the drivers door the interior light turns on and shuts off just fine. When you open the passengers door the interior light will not come on.
Here is the really strange thing about all of this. Once the passengers door has been opened and closed the drivers door will not "kill" the interior light when you shut the truck off and exit through the drivers door!
If someone uses the passengers door when I am ready to shut the truck off, I have to exit through the passengers door for the interior light to shut off.
I have looked for the door switch that controls the interior light on the passengers door but can't find it. I'm thinking the switch is failing on the passengers door and I need to replace it.
I have searched the Internet for a wiring diagram (a free one) but can't find a thing.
Is there anyone out there that can help me with this problem? If I can find the switch. I think I am smart enough to change it out but first I have to find it. Pulling the fuse isn't an option because that kills the 4-WD controls.

Going crazy in Maine!

lube the door latches with wd-40, open and close the doors several times, then relube. Switches are in the door latch. This might help, try it they are usually sticking. If it doesn't work, you need to take the door panel off and get at the latch to replace the switches.

Talking interior lights out

A hunting buddy had the same problem last summer. He took the fuse out so it wouldn't run his battery down. When late fall came with a early snow, his 4wd wouldn't work. He took it to a garage to have it fixed. The mechanic replaced the fuse and told him it was fine. A couple days later he was down at my camp to do some hunting when his interior light wouldn't go off again. I lubed the hinges for him. Total cost $75.00 for a WD40 cure. I told him if he would have asked I could have told him. Not a mechanic by any means.

Yep, very quick and easy, and usually works. I actually got a Ford tech to show me this trick, instead of the 'we'll fix it for $$$' that I get at most dealerships. He sprayed WD-40 in the latch, and moved the latch up and down with his pen a few times. Closed the door and the light went off. Took about 30 seconds. Give it a shot.

It WORKED!!

Hello,

JeepTech - sprayed WD-40 into the latchlike you said. I closed the door, opened it and it worked the first time. The light is back to working normal and I can stop going crazy about the whole thing!

Funny thing happen a few hours later. My oldest son stopped by and I told him about your solution. He said " Yea dad, I wanted you to look at my Taurus. The door ajar light will not go off any more and it started about two weeks ago". I grabbed the WD-40, went out in the driveway and sprayed all four door latches. He opened and close each door a couple of times - jumped in closed the door and started his car.... problem solved - no more door ajar light sticking on!

Thanks to the both of you for you responces - this is a great forum to get some really good and low cost solutions!

Ted
