Power steering pump noise
I have an 88 F250XLT Lariat, 460. The power steering pump was leaking, so I had my mechanic replace. Replaced it with an aftermarket, napa pump. Now I have a high pitched whine, as if there is not enough fluid. Fluid level is good. We have replaced the unit(under warranty) but still the same noise. Anyone else experience this? Is there something to be done? or do I just have to live with it?
Does it whine all the time or just when you have the wheel locked to one side? If it's just when the wheel is locked, thats a Ford for ya. If it's all the time, the bypass valve could be the wrong one, or sticking. Just a thought.
I had the same thing with my 96 F150, I replaced the pump 2 times and both times it got worse. The aftermarket pump made more noise than the one that was in the truck. What i found out was when you buy a pump thats all you get not the pully and they are different in sizes not by much but enough to make a noise. I put an old pump from a mercury on my truck and i got the pully and the pump and i have no noise any more.
