Ok, I've replaced the stock shocks on the Ranger with Bilstein OE. What I was looking for was a smoother ride and most importantly, a decrease in ride chop(unloaded bed) going around a corner on a washboard road. (If the road was even moderately bumpy, the back end would hop around to where several steering corrections had to be made. It could be a little scary on wet roads.)
Now, after riding around on it for a few days, I've got a pretty good idea of what it's like. The ride is smoother, but only very slightly. Most people would still say it was firm. The best thing is, the choppy ride has decrease by at least 50%. I'm happy overall with the shocks. For me, they're a good comprimise between responsive handling and a decent ride.
In summary, if you're looking for a smooth ride, I'd look elsewhere. But if you're looking for a great handling, moderately firm ride that has more control over OE, Bilstein's should be considered.
