last week, while crawling under my truck,i noticed that the tube was filled with silicon.i immediately ordered a new filter and gasket for it ,along with the oil filter adaptor i'd been meaning to install.when they came today,i dutifully crawled underneath, put on the adaptor and a new filter, and pried out the big glob of silicon from the tube.thats when i realized that there was a pcv valve installed on the top of the breather filter canister, with a hose running to just below the front of the carb.did i screw up?should i have left the tube sealed.there was not a filter in the canister, but i installed the new one and re-hooked up the pcv valve.i was thinking that opening the tube would possibly releive the pressure that was causing my oil pump to leak.what should i do ?thanks, steve

I sounds like to me that they pluged the tube so that the pcv valve would pull the vapors from the engine. And not the dirt from the road. I would plug the tube back up and leave your new filter in their. I think your oil pump leek is unrealated.
do you think the placement of the pcv is correct-on the top of the road draft tube housing?everyone else said it should be on the valley pan.will it work?thanks, steve
I would just look for a valley cover from a 61 or later with the vent in back, [ I assume you have a 292] they are fairly easy to find yet and connect your pcv to the vent and make up a blank to cover the hole for the draft tube.
I have asked MANY questions on this Subject! And treid many sulutions. I now have my down draft tube blocked, and my breather/fill tube hose run down below the engine. it seems to work best for my tired old 292. But Whatever works. These things with a litle TLC can go forever. don't be affraid to be Creative.
I have had 2 Y-blocks in the past 3 or 4 years and a total of 3 oil pumps. Every one of the oil pumps leaked. It wasn't bad enough to worry about though. One of the engines was old with who knows how many miles on it and the other is in the truck now and about 1 1/2years (8500 miles) old. It is probably because they sit on the shelf at the parts store and the gaskets dry out and don't seal as well.
