I took my bronco out last night and after i was done everything seemed fine. i went to a friends and then a couple hours later i got up to leave. i stared my car and a clicking started. it went away so i though nothing of it, but then it came back. I looked under the hood and i found out that the pully on the airconditioner was the noise. The pully is rinning smoothely, but there is a plate or something on the outside will stop spinning and then catch again, thus creating a click.
Does anyone know how to fix it and what the problem is. if not, ill just tinker, but it is always nice to have a helping hand. Thanks!
That is your ac compressor clutch engaging and disengaging. I didn't see where you were from but you might think that you weren't using your ac so why is your compressor engaging? To the best of my knowledge your heater uses compressed air as well. Your clutch may be bad on your ac compressor thus causing the clicking sound. Just my .02.
How often does it click? Every few minutes? Every second? Its normal for this to click, maybe once every minute or so It all depends on the weather. It engages and disengages your ac compressor to prevent over pressurization. Were you using your ac at the time? How about the mix and defrost settings? Turn your climate control to off and the clicking will stop.
AC was not on, i had tested it that day though... it used to click every min. or so but now it is like every 7 seconds. dont know what it is. ill try turning climate control all the way off, but if it doesnt stop, what should i do and how much will it cost??? The idle changes too every time it clicks, so it is really annoying. Thanks! Jason
I also have this problem on a 92 Explorer I just bought. It is worse at idle, and I have been told that it's normal, but it is annoying and probably unsafe, there must be a way to fix this!
The compressor will also come on if you have your defroster on. Thats what pulls the moisture out of the air to help clear the window faster then those without AC.
If it is clicking that often with the A/C or defroster on, your freon charge is probably too low. It should not be engaging when you have the heater or vent on. It will engage when you have it on mix, normal, max or defrost no matter whether you have the temperature selector on hot or cold. Does it do it when you have it on OFF? If it does, you have an electrical problem.
If it does it with the climate control on "off" and you have an electrical problem, you can simply unplug the compressor for the time being until you figure out the problem. That would solve the immediate issue of the compressor running.
My guess (for the electrical problem) would be somewhere in the climate control switch itself.
