If your taking out a good stock 65ish one just hook it to the 302 it bolts to the same mount.
When i pulled my 6 out to put my 302 in I left the alt wired up and unbloted it from the motor and put it to the side then put the new 302 motor in and bolted the old alt to te engine.

If your looking to clean up the compartment some then yes go 1 wire.

This makes it a new ballgame. You will have to remove the regulator wiring and get a schematic for the new. By all means, go with the one wire. It will be much simpler.
