Vacuum Generator
I have a '93 F-150 with a 5.0 liter engine. A while back the yellow "Check Engine" light started coming on intermittently. I had it checked at the local dealer and they said that the "vacuum generator" had gone out and needed replacing. In the meantime, it has developed a bad "ping" and knock when accelorating. The only way to remedy the ping has been by adding an octane booster to the gas.
My questions are: What is the vacuum generator and could it have something to do with the ping (like not advancing the distributor sufficiently)? Where is it located and is it a consumer replaceable part? I can't find anything about it in my Haynes aftermarket manual.
Thanks folks!
