Headliner replacement

Anybody pulled out their headliner? Mine is starting to sag and when I pull a corner away to take a peek it looks like it should be glued to a cardboard base which is just secured round the edges. I'm thinking I can remove this and just glue the fabric back in place. There is no sign of foam backing anywhere.

To answer your question in one word....YES

The fabric is cemented to a cardboard liner. Use 3M contact cement for fabrics.

Compeletly remove the fabric from the liner. Thoroughly clean the liner with a pad such as scotchbrite. Spray the entire perimiter of the liner with cement, make a diagnal X across the liner surface. Do the same on the reverse side of the fabric. Laying the fabric on the liner, work it from the center out to the edges. If your fabric is damaged, you can buy the whole kit out of Niagara Falls, New York which includes the correct fabric and adheasive for $59.

Or you could just pull it out and forget about it. The head liner in mine was sagging - just removed the sunvisors and tore it (fabric and cardboard) out. The underside of the cab roof is painted to match the rest of the cab and the only thing that doesn't look right is the interior lamp doesn't "seat" tight against the metal.

More Tips!

Be sure to apply cement around the liner hole at the overhead interior lamp if your truck is so equipt.

If your truck has a cargo lamp, inspect the penetrations for rust or other signs of water seepage. Now is the time to correct this and minor overhead cab light leaks if you have them.

headliner

most fabric stores sell headliner material with foam already on the back(about $11.00 a yard). if your cardboard is all warped (mine is because some idiot(ME) put in a leaky moonroof).take it out, peel off fabric, mix some franklin tite bond II wood glue with a little water, cut up an old phone book, and apply it like you would fiberglass cloth and resin.mine is an 84 crew cab ,so the headliner by the yard is to small,so i bought a cheap bed blanket, glued it on, then got some material from the fabric store and did the roof and all my door panels. YEAH, my wife helped, you know, quality time and all that! also , krylons' satin finish rattle cans, stick real good on the plastic interior panels, if you wipe them down real wet with laquer thinner first

Thanks. I got the headliner out complete with cardboard backing, which was in reasonably good shape. I noticed there was a thin foam layer there, but it looks like it comes off easy enough to allow for a good glue base. As 'dhermesc' said, it actually looks O.K. without liner, but far too noisy, especially in the rain. Now that I've got everything off, the rest is a job for the wife, I'm not much into the material thing.

My truck originally didn't come with a headliner. I bought some black replacement carpet, and some ultra duty spray adhesive, and put the carpet on. Looks really good with my black interior. I put it in almost a year ago and still looks as if it was original. I will take pictures of it sometime if you guys wanna see what it looks like.
