I have just got a 78 ford with a 400 2bbl. I am looking to get a K&N air filter assembly. I am wondering what size i should get. I have very little experience with ford trucks. Any help is appreciated.
Whatever size you want! just check out the dimensions and do some measuring to make sure you don't have any clearance problems. I am running a 14" wide by 4" high K&N with a pre-cleaner, but it's not the "drop-style". I wanted to make sure it cleared my new "HEI" distributor. Let me tell you, it just barely fits.
There are a number of threads here on air box modifications that can be found with the search function. It is not a good idea to replace the stock airbox with an "open" filter. In the summer you pull in hot underhood air which is poor for performance. In the winter you stand the chance of carb icing and poor fuel economy which is also poor for performance.
Open air filters look good on trailer queens and show cars but that airbox and the "plumbing" that goes with it are not on there just for fun.

...unless you don't already have an "airbox" or "plumbing"!
I bought mine to replace the stock oil bath air cleaner... an upgrade by almost anybody's standards. Some of the older folks will say they were the best filters ever made, but I remember seeing independent tests that said otherwise.
That being said, I doubt that your engine came with an oil bath. Eric does speak words of wisdom.
