Hey guys. I have a 91 Explorer. Only when I have the car running do I get gas vapors, but there is a bad smell of gas vapors in the cabin. It's not an exhaust leak cause it smells like gas, not exhaust. Any help?
Can you smell gas when outside at the driver side rear wheel well? If you can, it's proably that the tubes on the fuel sending unit have rotted through. If this is the problem, the fix is a new fuel pump.
The fuel pump and fuel gauge sending unit both mount to the same assembly in the gas tank. The tubes he's referring to are actually the gas lines, and they do have a reputation at that age for rusting through and creating a gas leak on top of the tank.
Another source for raw gas smell is the evaporative emissions system. If the tubing gets clogged or (as in my case) the cannister purge solenoid valve ceases to open, pressure can build in the tank and the gas vapors find their way out.
