New Tires Needed

I am getting pretty close to needing new tires. I currently have stock tires and wheels. I want to keep the same wheels, but would like to possibly get a little bit wider and possibly taller tire. If the price is way more than the stock tires I would just stick with the stock size. I also don't want to be in a situation where they might rub when turning or going over bumps. Again, if that is a possibility I would just stick with the stock size. Does anybody know what size I can safely move up to? Thank you!

Hey danielboone. You can go to a 285/75/16 with no problem what so ever. I dont think it even changes speedo. I went from stock which was 265/75/16 to 285's with no problems. Then I went to 295/75/16's in the bfg's all-terrain radials an also had no rubbing issues but my speedo changed a little bit. now I run 315/75/16's which had a 7 mile per hour change in speedo, had to re-calibrate speedo but also in a hard turn left or right, I get some rubbing on the spring packs. It dont bother me but I just have to be aware of it when making a hard turn. Any way hope this helps. Later.

on your year model you can put a 308 without having to modify anything on the truck.

Thanks for the input. Now I have a really dumb question. I currently have Michellin 235/85/16E tires. I know the 235 is the width in millimeters. I know the 85 has to do with the sidewall height, but isn't it some sort of formula or ratio? It doesn't mean the sidewall is 85 millimeters does it? If I move up to a 285/75/16 the tire would be wider, but would it be smaller or greater in diameter? I want to always make sure the truck will fit in my garage so it can't be too tall. Good point on the speedo, I would prefer to not have to recalibrate it.

The "85" and "75" refer to the aspect ratio or the ratio of the height of the tire vs the sidewall width. High perfornance car tires get down to 35 and 40 while most truck tires are up there in the 85 range. A "75" tire is 75% tall as it is wide, a "40" tire is 40% as tall as is it wide (so it is a very short sidewall tire). Remember, that's not the overall height it's the height of the sidewall.

Go to TIRERACK.COM...you can compare tires and get all the specs including overall height and circumference so you can see how much that tire would impact your speedo and such.
