After doing routine maintinence on my 96 ranger (new break pads & roters) the ABS light turned on after the repairs. The light turns on once the vehicle is in motion otherwise off. I thought that maybe the calipers were the problem so replaced those as well and bled the lines. I am positive I let no air into the system unless it somehow entered when i first spread the old calipers. The OBD II does not work with the ABS system therefore I was hopeing someone has a solution to this problem.
I would inspect the front sensors, you may have damaged something up there, below is a brief lowdown on the system.
The anti-lock brake system uses three sets of variable-reluctance sensors and toothed speed sensor rings to determine the rotational speed of each wheel. The sensors operate on magnetic induction principle. As the teeth on the speed indicator ring rotate past the stationary sensor, a signal proportional to the speed of the rotation is generated and sent to the anti-lock brake control module through a twisted-pair wire cable and wiring harness. The front speed sensors are attached to the suspension knuckles, and the speed indicator rings are pressed onto the backside of the rotor on 4x2 and onto the hub for Ranger 4x4. The rear sensor is bolted to the rear axle housing . The rear speed indicator ring is mounted on the ring gear in the rear axle.
The Ranger Haynes manual has the mthod for reading ABS codes....not specialized like OBD-2 engine code reading, if memory serves correct at this hour right off a offshore run....
I figured it out. The problem was exactly the sensor rings. This is the first time I replaced the rotors on the truck. I did notice that the new rotor was missing the ring and I tried to remove the old one but it didnt budge. Unexperienced in ABS I assumed it must not be important, which I was wrong. Now I have to fight Auto Zone since I replaced everything with the wrong part. The question is, who is at fault? Is it possible to buy the sensor ring and press it in or am i stuck buying a new roters bearings and seals?
I would say they owe you the parts you asked for, if there is more than one type of replacement part they should ask you about your vehicle to determine the correct part.
