Gooseneck hitch placement

Hey, I am getting to build another gooseneck hitch, and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how far forward of the rear axle centerline to place the ball. I have had them put about 1"-2" forward, but was just wondering what others think. If any of you that have the bolt on ones don't mind, would you measure yours to see what the manufacturers do. Thanks, Ted

I'm putting in a B&W and they say 49" from the tailgate end of the bed. Roughly 5 1/2" forward of the axle centerline

When I had my ball installed, the welder told me that 2 to 6 inches in front of the centerline is recommended. It also seems like you can go to the turnover ball website by B&W or the popuphitch website and they tell in the installation instructions how far to place ahead of the axle. If you have a long box I'd suggest going at least 4 inches because any extra weight you can throw forward will help your steering.
