Stange Sounds from Engine...

I just put a used 82' 302 into my truck, bought an 50 oz flywheel and a 'clutch kit', and now when I'm turning the thing over I hear a (horrible) metallic sound coming from the bellhouse area. Any clues as to what this might be? The starter is new also. I'm wondering if the 50 oz flywheel is thicker than the 28 oz?

thats a real ****off to do all that work and have somthing go wrong, take the startter of and measure the two if you still have the other one around and then look for filelings in the bottom of the bellhousing your probably going tpo have to take it all apart again if the bellhousing is full of filelings you might whant to clean the starter out.

Anybody swap in another 302? Read this post.

A buddy at work is helping me make the swap, and we disagree as to what is the cause of the noise. It sounds like the starter is grinding (hard) when the engine is cranked. Bill thinks I have the wrong flywheel, but I tend to think it is the wrong starter.

Well, I guess I need to pull the starter and see if it is the starter from an automatic or one that is for a straight drive. The part number say's it is for a straight drive, but...

Dang!! I hate to have to pull the trans and flywheel off again.

It's very possible you have the wrong flywheel. Theres not much difference in starters between manual and automatic.

OK. But what is meant by 'wrong flywheel'? The one I bought is from a guy on this FTE website, he had pictures, casting numbers, etc. Other than actually measuring the thing before I put it in (which I now recognize that I should have done), I can't think of how it would be the wrong flywheel (unless it is from a 351?!)

Yes you should of compared and measured the flywheel before install, However check you starter first and find out where its grinding on it if it is. Since your engine is a 82 the 50oz should be right unless is an 81 or earlier then it 28oz.
