My son has a 1996 ranger 4 cylinder 5 speed. yesterday he experienced times that it would not start. motor spins over fine. has about 80,000 miles on it. one time it did start to run , then sputtered out and died. When it wouldn't start, i could not hear the fuel pump run or prime up when the key was turned on.
this morning, it started fine and i could hear the fuel pump prime up. my questions are:
1. is there a common problem on these trucks with the electric pump going bad?
2. could it be the relay instead? is there a relay??
3. where is the relay?
4. is it a big job to change the fuel pump? does anyone have any tips.
I appreciate your help very very much in advance. Kent
Might be a flaky fuel pump relay, since they are only 10 bucks, i'd just change it. If I had a 96, i would also have one of these for it: an "electrical & vacuum troubleshooting manual" from here: www.helminc.com it will tell you where the relay is & how to test the fuel pump circuit.
Thank you, i purchased a relay today at lunch and will put it in tonight. The more i think about it, i believe it is the relay. I would think that the pump would either run or it wouldn't run. Thanks for the help, Kent
My 95 did the same thing,I replaced the fuel filter and all is well.when you have a no start situation, try turning the key on then off 3 or 4 times, then try to start it.this will force fuel past a cloged filter and build enough pressure to start.the filter is less then 10 and you will need the removal tool for about 5 bucks.
I here-by retract my previous post. the filter didnt fix my problem,it started not starting again. It starts then dies, starts then dies. Thanks to 87 XLT and ken 00,I tapped the relay a couple of times and it started right up! So after a trip to the ZONE,to replace the relay, its working fine.Less then 10 bucks, cheapest fix ever! Thanks again.
