Memory problem.

Ok this is wierd, well when i bought my truck. 1996 F-150, it had mad wires everywhere from the security alarm that was currently in there, i'm not sure while removing all that if i did something to the Memory 12 V+ wire thats there, or if it even worked before. but anyways now , if i save a station to the headunit, and than shut the radio off and turn it back on it saves... but once i turn the ignition off, and back on again, it's all back to the preset stations, any ideas?

Is this an original HU or aftermarket? Did you install it yourself or was it already installed? If its aftermarket, you can check the fuse to that 12 V wire (it should have an inline fuse from the stock harness, orange wire). If its not a fuse, you can splice it into the fuse box with one of those special fuses with a terminal sticking out of it. Just make sure you use a fuse that is always hot. Hope that helps

yes iv checked that fuse, and it is there, and it's fine . could there be a fuse in the 12 v memory wire thats already in the truck that runs to the wire harness one, or maby that wire is just dead somehow? but what i dont understand is how the memory works fine until i turn off the key and turn it back on.

Josh,

Factory or aftermarket? Aftermarket decks have fuses at unit. Also, grounding is a big issue. If ground is not connected real good, it can cause memory problems.

The memory works while there is power going to the unit. When you turn off the ignition you are turning off the power to the unit, this is why the orange (memory) wire has to to have power at all times (with ignition on and off). Check your ground too, as pointed out above.

it is aftermarket. no i mean , Ill have the truck on lets say and itll work fine if i program a station, or even if the key is on itll work fine, but once i turn the key off, than turn it back on , it resets everything... the ground should be perfect? there is that black grounding wire wich is hooked up fine, if it wasnt the headunit wouldnt turn on.

Also on the tag that came with it, said that the memory wire HAS to be connected to the 12 V red wire, the power wire. for the head unit to work, so i did that as well, i don't see what the problem is. that memory wire is getting direct power.

I think you are getting your wires mixed up. Your red Power wire needs to be connected to an iginition controlled 12 v source. It should only have power when the key is in the ignition in the ON or ACC. position (doesn't matter if you actually turn on the engine or not). The orange memory wire has to have power ALL the time (even without the key in the ignition). You can get this power directly from the battery (fuse box is better). If you hook up both wires together one of the two things will happen:
1. you will lose your presets when you turn off the ignition (Both wires are connected to an ignition controlled 12V wire)
2. the radio will always have power (it can only bet turned off with the radio OFF button) because both wires have direct power.

This should clear up the problem.
