I have 1986 heavy 1/2 ton 4wd . It used off road only, gathering firewood, going to my cabin (up a very steep incline), and light duty farm work.
I wanted to now if welding the differentials would really tear up the drivetrain with stock size tires? I do understand that there are some drawbacks. Thank you for your time!
I welded mine in the rear on a race truck with no problems as far as tearing up the drive train it is no harder on it than running a spool, is just harder on tires although if you are talking about the front, I wouldn't recommend it as it can also cause some sterring issues that you don't want
Is it going to tear up the rear tires quickly, running on hardpack and mud. Because if the tires would take some abuse i was going to order some super swamper ltb 31x11.5
if you are off-raod all the time, i wouldn't worry about it. I have a lincoln locker in the front of my green machine, and offroad i do not have a problem. You are not supposed to run in 4x4 on the road anyhow. In the winter i keep on hub locked in so i can turn, otherwise i have not had a problem yet.
i highly condone it...but be aware that your tires will wear out quicker, esp if you drive on the road a lot! I had my rear lincoln locked and I loved it but since i got my big tires i wanted them to last a long time! But now I have my front lincoln locked and I freaking love it! Also, whenever I go play or go to local mud bogs I will throw in my old welded up chunk back in and have front and rear lockers! you can't beat it. the only thing is on the front you will need to play with it a lil bit to get used to it! What i do is lock one hub in (pass. side) and the 4x2 then when i get to the mud hole I can go play and when I get stuck or start to bog down i jump out and lock the driver side in and give it hell!

does this truck ever see the road in 4x4? if not weld it up front and rear....you wont regret it and the traction will be unbeliveable compared to wut you have now. with stock tires you wont tear up nothin more than you could now.
Thank you for all the helpful input. The truck never even crosses a road! So i will weld the rear and see if that will fill my needs, if not i will do the front too.
