I have a 77 f150 with a 360 and when I turn the key, i can hear the starter turn but nothing happens. When I first got it a few days ago, it would make a lot of banging when trying to start and now, it doesn't try to do anything. Is this the symptom of a bad starter or something more?
Sounds like a bad starter. Pull it out and make sure your flex plate or flywheel isn't missing teeth. otherwise you could take your starter to your local auto parts store and have it tested.
I'm not too good with these old motors. I'm assuming the flex plate and flywheel are part of the starter?
I called my dad and he suggested spinning the fan to turn the motor a little and possibly off the bad spot in the starter. I did this and now the starter starts to spin but locks up as soon as I turn the key.
I can tell that this is going to be a fun truck to have around.

sounds like a bad starter also make sure if u replace the starter to go a head and get a new siliniod(im not the best speller) i got the starter and the siliniod all a for about $55 but the starter was rebiult.
Flex plate and flywheel are part of the drive train. Starter cranks the flywheel cranking the engine over.
So when you crank it you don't hear anything at all? Check battery, battery might not have enought juice to crank over, but enough to run other systems. If battery is good, it's probably the starter and solenoid. Get a rebuilt starter. They're relaitvely cheap and work pretty good for an old truck.
