My buddy and I put a borla cat back system on his nephews F150. It's the model that has dual exits at the rear bumper. He went to get an inspection sticker and got rejected because the guy inspecting the truck said it may or may not be louder than stock. I was thinking about getting a Borla for my SD and would like to now in any members from Massachusetts had any problems getting an inspection sticker.
I was an inspector for a couple of years... This guy was being a Donkey. There are plenty of inspection stations (hundreds) and most will pass you. If you think the inspector is being a PITA on purpose, ask him to write his inspection Number, name and station #, and name down. There is a number to report these stations. Ask to speak to the owner too.
I am not sure if that particular Borla is CARB certified, but if it is, in the worst case you can appeal to the registrar and get a waiver. If you still have a muffler and Cat, I would fight it. Get your money back and go else where. It is the custom exhausts where ther is no Cat or Muffler that I would worry. I will be changing my exhaust in the near future.
An exampel: I Lifted my truck and the inspector wasn't going to pass me because he THOUGHT it was too high. I made a huge scene. I made him measure and like I told him, I was 1 inch under the allowable. I informed him rather rudely that his opinions could be kept to himself!
That's what I thought, but I don't have the time or the patients to deal with someone like that. The Borla is a typical cat back system as for CARB Cert. I don't know what that means. To me his truck sounds like a Mustang not loud just mean.
I just put the flowmaster force II system on my dad's 03' F-150 this weekend....it uses the 50 series muffler.....He gets a inspection in May....wonder what will happen......From Chicopee....howdy neighbor......I live in Granby and from south Hadley......
Yeah I grew up in South Hadley too. Lived just about across from the Cozy Oaks. Moved to Chicopee When I got Married. As for the flowmaster how does it sound?

I feel that a inspector hassling you over a Cat back is very unusual. Most of my other vehicles are much more aggressive then cat back, i.e. headers to glasspacks ( ) and lifts, etc. I normally just go to any old inspection station with out an issue. I find it best to ask upfront. I tell them that "Yeah, I have lif that is "Border Line", do you have any issues?" Almost all will say is it fine if it is minor. If not you go down the road to the next place. All they really want is your $29.00 and no hassles.
Oh, a CARB certified exhuast (Californina Air (Resource??) Board) means that it is emmisions and noise friendly and by Mass inspection standards, legal.
Just take your $29 elsewhere. If you have any friends with modded cars/trucks it's pretty easy to find a decent station. Ask around, you'll find a cool inspector.
What are you guys talking out inspection? I live in wisconsin and we don't have to get inspected when we put a exhaust system or do a lift kit. HEY boxcar1974 what the part# for that flowmaster system, woundering if it would fit my 2003 F-150 5.4L, and does his mgp get any better????
Neither do we but when that little colored sticker with the number on your windshield expires you gotta go in and get an safety and/or emissions inspection or else the coppers get on your case...
I think the flowmaster number is 17222 for straight out the rear of the truck. They also have exit behind the rear wheels. Summit racing is the best place to buy it. Runs around $325. As far as MPG we just put it on on saturday and it is not a daily driver. His truck puts on about 200 miles a month. So MPG is not a issue.
I had mine done last week on my 02 250 at Hanscom AFB. The head inspector for the state was there doing his yearly station eval. He didn't say a thing about the FM or the noise. We did however get into a pi$$ing contest about my receiver hitch. Nothing out if the ordinary, a 5" drop hitch. He said its a tripping hazzard and I have to remove it. ??????? I told him to show me where its written that I can't have a hitch. He didn't like that too much and the guys that work there had to lead us away from each other. But he was OK with the FM. The great state of Taxachusetts. We left England to get away from the taxes, now we need to leave MA.

Not time to jump ship, it's just time to take it back! Definitely an idiot on the inspection. Not that I want to defend him, but the inspectors are pretty paranoid in Mass now. They lose thier OWN driver's license for violations. You have to love Mass's laws... It costs $100 now to excersize my RIGHT to bare arms. More than 300,000 laws on the books regarding gun ownership in Mass. When is the last time you saw a criminal who cared about a law?

check out this website. If the link wond work go to www.sema.org and do a search for massachusetts and read the articles. I cannot believe this. Any of you who live in massachusetts MUST contact the legislators on the list and tell them what we think of this BULL*****....
Damn 29 dollars is expensive! I paid 5 here in OK, before they dropped inspections all together 3 years ago! I guess those MA inspectors have to find it really lucrative in order to mess with inspections at all.
Of course, now you see some real junkers putting around in OK. I'c be all for them coming back if it made the roads a little safer (ie - these cars I see have bumpers dragging the ground throwing sparks!)
