Noise during acceleration

I am the proud owner of a 1987 Bronco 5.0 and I was wondering if anyone had an idea about the sound I am getting at acceleration. It sounds kind of like a diesel when I accelerate but once I let of the gas it stops. It seems to be doing this at a higher speed like when I am on the freeway or when I punch the gas. I read some other posts that where talking about there water pump making noise kind of like that, could this be it. Thanks for any help.

Sounds to me like lifters rattling. Could be time for a little R&R on the top end. How many miles on the engine?

Try a high octane gas, octane boost or a good fuel system cleaner like BG44. Could just be detonation. If nothing, then have the timing checked. Could be off a little. Other than that, with that many miles, could be time for a fresh motor. There are alot of people who have had their engines last longer than that, but there have also been those who had to replace before that many miles. Depends on the maintenance.

I am wondering if this suggestion is a possibility. My brother was saying that he thought that it might be the air pump or something in that range, because this seems to happen when I am at high rpm’s over 2000, and when I let of the gas it goes away; but when I barely touch the gas pedal again the noise picks back up. Thanks for the help.

Thanks for all the help. I am going to do a major tuneup this weekend (plugs, cap & rotor, etc...) hopefully this alleviates the problem. Thanks again.

Timing is more important to your issue than anything else that you will do on your tune up. Be sure that your timing is correct. If it is and it still detonates, than your timing chain might be excessively worn; either retard the timing to "fix" the problem (you will lose power) or check and/or replace the timing chain.

Also, check to see if your engine has a knock sensor; I am not sure if yours does. If it does, and it is bad, this can cause your problems.

Finally, be sure that it is not simply a noisy belt. They can sound like detonation.

I believe that i may be having the same noise that you are. Does it sound kinda like your valves chattering??? About a week ago i had to replace the ignition module and to do that i had to twist the ditributor. i forgot to mark its original position with chalk and when i was finished i realized i had screwed up the timing. My dad and i got out the timing gun and fixed it the best we could. Now my vehicle runs better than it did before...but when i accelerate i hear the noise. ALSO i had heard this noise about a year ago when i replaced the plug wires but accidentally crossed my 1st and 8th wires but when i switched them to there proper positions it went away. If you have already fixed the problem, let me know how you did it.
