Can someone tell me what is the weight capacity of the side rails of my '99 F-350 (8' bed)?
I want to fabricate a rack that holds both of my ATV's. This rack will sit on the side "rails". I'm not sure where to post this so I will try other areas of subject matter.
Good question, there was just a thread about this vary thing.
tSomeone, I forget who, said that thier racks actually bend or crushed the top rail on thier bed. Not sure what they had up there, but still doesn't sound to good to me.
I saw that carrier. It is not like I want however. I want my machines to ride sideways. So I've decided to make my own. For 1/2 the cost of that carrier, I bought a nice wire feed welder and all the material!
As long as you can put some supports down into the bed you should be fine. I wouldn't put all the weight on the bed rails.. i can see some cracking happening just from the slight fles the bed needs by itself. If you could use the rails and then some supports down into the bed that would probably last a lot longer.
One time while in heavy traffic on a fourlane, a scrapper dropped a washing machine out of his truck when he hit a pothole, right onto mine. Sure a washer has a few pounds to it, but the damage to my truck's bedside was way more than I thought it would be!
Don't depend on those siderails to carry much weight! Think of the potential damage if the siderail was to collapse while on the highway!
It would be best if you design the carrier so that the weight is transferred down to the frame of the truck, and bolt it all together, don't depend on gravity to hold it down.
Then post pictures of the finished product so us others can get ideas from what you have done!
I wouldn't buy that rack either. But, I may make one "just like it" . I've already made my version of ramps for the truck bed. The only comment I've heard about having the Quads sideways is the plastic on the quads isn't designed to have the wind blow on them in that way, could cause damage.
Thanks for all the info everybody.
Pictures will be coming soon (haven't tried that on this site!)
As far as plastic fenders . . . maybe I'll cover with a tarp if it gets bad.
