I have a white 2001 F-150 that has tiny rust colored stains all over it. I noticed it a week ago when I washed it, it was the worst on the lower drivers side and tailgate and was minimal on the passenger side it was on both the metal and plastic parts. I could pick the spots with my fingernail and they would get light, so I took some rubbing compund and lightly went over the affected areas to remove all the spots and then waxed the truck. I just washed it again tonight andthe spots are back, but not nearly as bad. What is causing this and how can I keep it from returning? Also, how much can I use rubbing compound on the paint without taking the clearcoat off, and is there something else I can use instead, and is this a common problem with white paint? BTW I live in Iowa where they salt the roads, but I wash the truck every week and wax it a least once a month. Any help would be appreciated.
It sounds like Rail Dust might be the culprit. Here's a link to one of the threads discussing rail dust. The last post by LK includes a link showing a truck with this problem.
