i have little knowledge of mechanics/engines. when i start my vehicle (86 ford 150) the pressure gauge reads high, as i drive it, it slowly dips low and starts a light rap. i've stopped driving it and need a diagnoses before i bring it to a garage and have them rack me over the coals.
thanks
That's what is happening, the engine starts off cold then as it warms up the bearing surfaces expand causing a wider opening thus ,lowering oil pressure.
You can put a hiher viscosity oil for a while but the engine is telling you it is wearing out.
How many Miles on it ?
Myself, I would first hook up an oil pressure guage that is known to be accurate and see what you've got. If it should turn out to be bearings, if the rest of the engine is in reasonable shape (compression + no burnt valves, etc) and if you don't plan on keeping it for another 100K, you have a couple of options that are cheaper than a rebuild:
1) New bearing inserts provided that the crank is within spec.
2) Turn the crank and go with new bearing inserts.
If you drop the pan you can grab each rod and feel for slop; excessive wear will show up. A more exact method of checking the clearance would be to use plastigage.
