Just kind of wanted some input from you folks on my situation. I leased an '02 Explorer new, a little over 2 years ago. At 37.5K miles (August of '03) the bands in the transmission broke. The dealership explained to me that they replaced the transmission and it now had a 3 year, 36K mile warranty. Now at 50K, the transmission has completely gone again and they say they only rebuilt the other one and because I have driven over 12K miles, it is not under warranty. After much argument, they agree that they will do an out of warranty adjustment and I will only pay 30%. Trick is 30% is close to $800.00. Haven't had the car much more than 2 years. Replaced the transmission twice, replaced 2 sensors that cost over $200 each. Hard to justify making $10,000 worth of payments on a car, and the repair bill has been over $5000 in that time frame. I have always been a loyal Ford owner (8 in the last 10 years), but I am going to have a hard time buying another. Anyone have any advice?
Hmmmmm......Fords are generally pretty good products. But, as far as the Exps go....they do seem to have more trans problems than the average.
That said, your particular issue is not with the Ford make, per se, but the dealership.
If I understand your email correctly, when the bands broke at 37.5K miles, the dealer claimed to have replaced it and that it had a 36K mile warranty. Such work usally includes paperwork stating so (warranty, etc).
Don't you have any documentation about that first "replacement" which they (if I understand correctly) lied about?
If so....that is your ticket. Just contact Ford directly....or the regional factory rep. with that documentation (assuming you have such). If they did indeed claim a new trans at 37.5 K with warranty....that is what they owe you. Ford will understand that...if not....any small claims court will.
it is a 12 month/12,000 mile warranty on replaced parts standard, I believe....I don't know what the 36K is you are referrring to, but I was sure to get this clear when I had to pay for a new transmission on my old explorer...it was 12/12...I remember it perfectly.
Sorry to hear about this. How long is the lease? You are racking up some miles for a lease, although I assume you worked that out at the start. Read the fine print in the lease agreement, you probably dont have any leverage to do much, except the fact you are going to be handing them a high mileage semi-lemon back after the lease expires.
Ever since my old 95 Mustang began leaking oil and costing me big at 37K, I buy extended warranties.
