I recently got my hands on a 90 f250 and transferred my deck and speakers to it. I have a jvc cd player and two 6 1/2 inch speakers in the door. The speakers sound ok for talk radio and such, but are poor for anything with bass. I want to add a single sub behind the seat and then block the lows going to the 61/2's. I dont listen to hiphop or anything like that, just want a little thump. I have preamp outputs on the deck. I assume that I need an amp, a sub, and enclosure, and a couple of "filters" (don't know the correct term) for the doors. What else do I need, and how do I set it up.

There isn't really anything difficult about what you want to do, bit it's time consuming. You will need to run wiring for the amp, which consists of power cable from the battery to the amp, RCAs and remote turn-on from the head unit to the amp, and ground cable and speaker wires from the amp. You can get an amp wiring kit from Walmart that will suit your needs. You will need the proper size power and ground cable for the power output capabilities of whatever amp you get. If you just want a little thump, as you say, take a look at truck boxes that are made specifically for behind the seat of your truck. One with a single 10" or maybe even an 8" should be OK. And keeping the bass out of your 6 1/2s is pretty easy. You can buy filters rated at different frequencies to do the trick. They are commonly called "bass blockers" and they simply connect to your speaker wires. Anything you buy should have detailed connection instructions. If not, post here and someone will help.
I was thinking one 12 or two 10's. I was thinking that the one twelve would be easier. What do I look for as far as power ratings and such for both the sub and amp.

Although it's not a must, it's not a bad idea to get an amp with the RMS rating of the sub. I would recommend a mono amp specifically for sub use. One thing to remember, if you go too "big" on the bass, it will be easy to overpower your front speakers. Especially since you are using just the JVC head unit with 6 1/2s. I would stick to something mild to give a little thump like you mentioned to begin with. 100-200 RMS should be plenty.
