59 brake problems

59 brake problems

I got my truck back from the paint shop and have been putting it all back together and can't get the brake pedal to stay hard. I have rebuilt all of the brake cylinders on all four drums and have bled the brakes. I can't seem to get the pressure to stay up in the lines. I thought it was the MC since the truck has been sitting for 15 years. New master cylinder in and still very soft pedal. I re-adjusted all the shoes and still soft. Any tips, hints. Is there any "Brakeagra" out there? (get it like viagra, I got lots of them.)

Did you bench bleed the master before you put it in? Sounds like there's air somewhere in the system still. Brakes adjusted so a slight drag is on them when you spin them? When you bleed the cyls, you get a good flow of clean fluid out of the bleeder? You started with the farthest one? Right rear, left rear, right front, left front? Steel lines are good, no rust? After 15 years of sitting, I'd replace all the steel lines and the rubber lines to be safe. Just a few suggestios......

Hi barry,

Is that what's considered a properly adjusted brake - to feel a slight drag?

I was told to back them off 5-6 clicks after contact. I've heard up to a dozen clicks on the happy star wheel.

I was always told to have a very slight drag on my brakes. I bring up the adjuster until the brake shoe and drum drags and stop. Then , I put my hand on the top of the tire and give it a good pull and take my hand off at the 1/4 rotation and see how far it spins. I always like one full tire rotation. It's not very scientific , but, it works for me. I really think there's some air stuck in your sysytem somewhere.
