Hello,i am in the process of a 302 swap in my 61 f100 unibody..is there any way to use my original gauges with this motor?if so what will i have to go?or will i have to buy new gauges?also i am puting an aod trany in..what will i have to do to get my speedometer working?
Thanks..Tom
Put the stock sending units in the new engine and it should work. The gauges don't care what engine they are hooked to.
We used the stock speedometer cable on our AOD in a 63.
you mean stock for the 61 or for the 302? will my speedometer hook right up to the aod? also would be interested in knowing what you did for a shifter?
I meant the truck's stock sending units. That is what the gauges are calibrated for.
The truck's speedometer cable will work with the AOD. We have done a couple of these. You may have to swap the gear on the end of it to get the speedometer accurate. Son's 63 speedo is more accurate than the wife's minivan.
Originally, we used a shift cable from a Chrysler K-car hooked to a mid 70's Ford truck steering column. Now it uses a solid shaft we harvested from the junkyard. It is a Ford unit but I don't remember what it came out of. Might have been a Ford truck. Just took a measurement of distance between the column and the transmission shift arm and found one that fit. The column has provisions for 3 forward speeds so it will not go into LOW. Never needed in the 3 years the truck has been on the road.
Oops, I failed to mention that the above truck has a Volare' subframe. We had to install a newer column when we did the IFS upgrade. The truck uses a 86 5.0L/AOD from a E150 van.
My 56 uses a Mustang floor shifter and a linkage rod. It has the AOD from a 88 T-bird.
