I just had a gear swap, and was told to break the gears in ( 1st 100 miles.) So I've been taking it EZ . I know I have to break in the front too. So today I put it in 4H and am cruising . I shifted into 3rd and let up on the gas when I did I heard a "slaping/grinding"sound. when I gas it again it quiets down
This onl hapen in 3rd and 4th .is this normal?:
well, if your hubs arent locked in then putting it in 4wd on any surface is fine. it will just turn the diff and everything. but if your hubs were locked in then dont. it sound to me like you were getting a little but of play in your gears. you may want to take it back and have one of the guys who put them in go for a ride with you and listen to it. the backlash may be way off and you are getting a bunch of slop in there. try that, take it back and get one of the installers to ride with you when it does it.
Sounds like gear mesh may have been set too thin. Ask the installer what he set the backlash to. It's the gear mesh amount. Too deep will burn up the gears and too little will snap em' under stress/use. Or just stay on the throttle and read your warranty. Grinding sound from the drivetrain is never good!!!
