Hi jb6 and welcome to FTE
It sounds like your IAC (Idle Air Control) is on it's way out. If you do a search in the forum you'll find lots of simliar posts.
Also check the rubber vacuum elbo's and connectors from the PCV valve all the way back to the intake. Shoot a little brake cleaner or carb cleaner at them with engine running and see if the RPM changes. They are bad about getting soft and the vacuum sucking a hole in them. Especially the one on the back of the intake. It is a dealer item only as far as I know. A good FORD parts man can get it for you. You get the whole thing, PCV valve, tube, and rubber connectors as an assembly.
My truck did the same thing about 98000 miles. It eventually just quit running. I found that by taking the idle control valve(on the ford it is a motor) off and cleaning it with Superclean and water, letting it dry, putting it all back, the truck did fine for another 50,000 miles. I got totally different issues now. LOL
Scocker is one of the few who has luck with the cleaning of the IAC.
Most have limited luck, and the thing goes bad again. I cleaned mine
and it didn't work at all, but showed a lean second bank code,
which points to O2 sensor. Shows how codes have to cross checked with
this site or another knowledgeable source on symptoms and cures.
My truck was idling up and down. IAC fixed that. It also needed
a new EGR valve and cleaning of the ECR ports, and had a dirty
MAS. Not to mention 2 blown tires and a bad alternator.
All in two weeks time. Runs alot better now of course.
