Hey folks! I'm a newbie here looking for a little help with a problem on the '66 Custom Cab I bought a few weeks ago. I can't seem to get the doors to lock without being locked inside myself.
Cocking the interior door handle will cause the exterior latch button to lock into the "out" position, but once I shut the door it's no longer locked. I tried locking it with the door key without any success. I'm stumped. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
These old trucks won't lock and slam like the new stuff. It sounds like your key or lock cylinder is worn out. Do you have another door key to try? Check the parts store on this site for replacement lock cylinders and keys for your truck.
I think the originals had the same ignition key as door? I can't remember since mine has been changed.
Was going to suggest try squirting some wd 40, or something simular in lock mechanism. Had a simular problem with my 65, but it was only one door. Purchased new set of door locks and found the old lock only needed a good cleaning. Seemed too simple.
Believe the 65 and 66 are same. Door can only be locked when closed, either by key, or from inside by pushing handle forward. If you can lock the doors by this method, then ditto with Putt's
post. If the key turns but does not set the lock, then could be something as simple as the retaining clip.
Some of the older trucks will have 2 set of keys, one set for ignition and other for doors. A previous owner may have replaced the ignition switch.
66, About the only thing I can add is that sometimes if my door is not closed tight enough it wont lock until I slam it.
I might suggest that when you have an hour to piddle with the truck, that you take the inner panel off and have a look up in the door and see how things work in there. It is pretty simple. I have some power locks from a van that I parted out that I hope to install one day. Adding a locking button should be a simple task as well.
o.k. i feel like a real idiot now.i`ve had my truck for several months now and just now figured out how to lock my doors, while reading this post.i thought maybe they did`nt have inside locks in 64.just like it did`nt come with seatbelts(mine did`nt.)well anyway, thanks for teaching me how to lock my doors.
I'm not too optimistic about lubrication being the solution. The door keys I have are brand new & unlock the doors just fine. They just won't lock the doors. I suspect that the previous owner has already installed (probably incorrectly) new locks to go with those new keys. Would anyone happen to have an exploded view pic of the lock assembly from a manual that they could scan for me?
I am going to try lubing mine up. I know the passenger side works but the divers doesnt want to click over. For a little while there you could put a little muscle into it and it would lock but now I get nothing.
Guys take the access panel off and work the rod with your fingers. There is a C clip in there that if you remove it the lock will come out in your hand. It's a very simple operation.
Use either graphite spray or powder in the cylinder to lube it. Do not spray things like WD40 in it.
Scanned a copy out of the 65 body assembly manual. Don't know how to email attachments from this forum. If you want to send me an email i will try attaching the diag. and return the email. Somewhat knowledgable about disassembling and assembling vehicles but don't know darn thing about computers.

That'd be great, daveengelson, but unfortunately I haven't been a member of this bboard long enough to email another member yet (wtf???). Perhaps you could email me by clicking on my profile?
