I know there is tons of V-10s running around with differn't exhaust on them, I had a friend that had a V-10 with stoc exhaust and we took the muffler off and installed a strait pipe, then we had a Y-pipe and duels installed, neither one sounded good, I am going to order a SD this spring\summer and want a good sounding exhaust, well I really want a deep mean sounding SD, is there a way to get the indy car sound out of them? They always sound so bussy and lite, I want a deep and mean sound, I do not care how loud or quiet it is, I just want it to sound perfect or close to. I figured I would go with bigger pipe to help deepen the sound, how does a Flowmaster 40 series 3in. singe in\3in. dual out with the tail pipes coming out behind each wheel sound? Any ideas or thoughts? Thanks all
I ordered a flowmaster original 40 series yesterday 3" in dual 2.5" out and when it gets here I am going to have it run out behind each wheel, hopefully the extra 90 degree bends made to exit behind each wheel will give it a better sound than straight out the back.I thought about a 3" in dual 3" out combo but I could not find a 40 series muffler with those specs.I will keep you posted.Did your friends truck sound anything like the V-10 at (www.exhaustsoundclips.com/ford.html)??
Listen to Mrwizard.
It will never, never, never sound like a V-8 because it ain't. Search the threads, this is a well discussed topic. Most, not all, but most who have installed a 40 series or similar muff are disappointed with the sound. I stuck a Flow 70 series on mine and I like it. Some noise outside but quiet inside.
labwillow: If it's a single 3" in split to dual 2-1/2's, it'll sound just like a single out, except now you can hear the same sound on the left side too.
The main reason for duals is so that I can hear it from the drivers side.I have read the threads and I feot that it was a draw in the 40/70 series debate.I have to start somewhere and if I don' like the sound of the 40 series I can always switch it for another muffler with only a few pipe mods.
Hey great guys, I forgot Flowmaster doesn't make a single 3in. in and dual 3in. out. It will be interesting to hear what Labwillow thinks of the sound. I am very well aware that the V-10 will never sound like a big block V-8, I listened to the sound clip of the V-10 with the 40 series and it sounded much better then my friends truck. I just had to ask if anyone has found a way to get a descent sound out of there truck, it sounds like the 70 series is the way to go. Anybody ever tryed something like a Dynomax strait through muffler? Keep the replys comming, the more ideas I get the better, I want to do it right the first time!
I cant for the life of me figure out why anyone would want their V10 to sound like every other cookie cutter Mustang, Camaro, Trans Am, Chevy Truck, Ford Truck, etc. witha V-8 and Flowmasters anyway. When I get on it in my truck, people instantly know that there is something different under the hood, and that's what I like. Someone will sometimes walk up to me and ask "what is in that thing?", and I just gesture towards those little V10 emblems on the front fenders. That usually get's followed up by a request to see under the hood, because most of them have never seen a real V10 up close. SO, what is the point in trying to sound like every other truck on the road with duals?
I'm guessing your running the Magnaflow? Single in\dual out? What size? Tips? Out the sides or rear? What would you say it sounds like? It is strait through correct? Thanks again!

I feel this way as well, I have not got the system installed yet (waiting for the muffler) but if it sounds anything like the sound clips I have heard its sure to be a head turner in my small town no matter what the exact sound is.I know that it will definitley be a great improvement over the quiet stock system. When I listen to the stock system during revs I can just hear the sound calling "release me relase me!!!" espically when you start reaching 4000 rpms. That is when my engine starts to shine.Hitch my trailer on, load it up good and head to the local 3/4 mile 8% grade put it in 2nd and wind her up we'll see what it does then ,now I can pull 48mph at the top with about 8K lbs on the trailer.Bet it will sound good with exhaust.
I guess what my deal is that I don't like the sound of the V-10, it sounds like it has no *****! It sounds like a bumble bee or a indy car, not attractive sounds, the 5.4 is gut-less and the 6.0 is not the most reliable engine as of yet, so that leaves me with the 6.8, i'm trying to make the best of the situation, I know I want duals, so I might as well try to get it to sound as good as I can, like I said, my buddy had straits on his and it got lots of attention, people just shook there heads, not the attention i'm looking for, I want the best\deepest\meanest sounding exhaust I can find, make sense? The best sounding 6.8s I have heard are the RVs that have the single 4in. exhaust, they seem to sound the best yet, I don't think I am going to install 40ft of 4in. pipe on mine though lol
I just installed an Aero Turbine. I don't have a sound clip of it, but I just listened to a sound clip of the 40 series. The clip sounds a touch lower than the Aero but the Aero REALLY screams when you hit 3+ Grand. A lot more than what this clip sounds like. It damn near blew my other car out of the garage. Sounded like Mario Adretti down the straightaway at Indy. I have been to Indy and can attest to the sound. I have never heard anything like it off the track. You can pick up an Aero Turbine for $195. I have the stock 3" in and out on my X. No need to put new pipes on. It was an easy fit into existing pipes. I would recommend this to anyone. Check thier website out. www.aero-turbine.com They have sound clips of engines, unfortunately not a V10. An interesting note, at above 5 grand (on race cars I suppose) the Aero actually creates more torque and HP than straight pipes. That is because the design of the muffler creates air flow that literally sucks the exhaust out instead of it having to be pushed out. Check it out.

Yes, I have upgraded to the Magnaflow. I started out with the 40 series flowmaster. Funny thing happened though, I was out in my front yard back in the fall, and a red F350 dually came by on the street, and it sounded TOUGH! I could tell it has a V10, so when the guy came back by in about 10 minutes, I managed to wave him over. I asked him about his exhaust, and he told me he had the Magnaflow. I ordered one the next day, and the Flowmaster was history.
