Help! need advice quick

My 93 Areostar had a problem with a deer yesterday and now both the Aero and the deer are dead. I have a 77 F150 2wd that we are thinking of rebuilding. It has a 351M and auto. She needs a new engine. Questions.

Can I install a 302? To increase gas mileage? Will going to a 302 from a 351 really help gas milage?

Where is the best place to get a crate motor?

I am having problems with hot starting with the current motor, say I drive for 30 min. and try to restart, she doesn't start until she cools. What to do about that?

Also if we put a new motor in we will need a good radio/cd player any ideas on that?

Thanks Jeff

The 351M has the same bellhousing as the 400 -460. So rebuild that 351M and build it. You will will get better MPG. Just put the stock pistons in, because aftermarket support for the 351M in pistons is not very good. Get a RV cam. Also get a 4 barrell intake and carb, probably find one on ebay or something. A edelbrock carb would work nice on there. I get 13 MPG with my 390, and a edelbrock 750, you would only need a 600 though. Also get headers and throw a glasspack on it. You should get pretty good gas milage with that setup. Otherwise stock motor you can get almost anywhere. Marshall makes a nice stock motor. As for a good radio cd/player, i just go to walmart and get what works, i like listening to johnny cash anyhow so i do not need anything that thumps.

Also the 302 motor will not bolt up to a 351M transmission

Bad starter, the winding's inside are going bad or it could also be that it is to close to a modified exhaust system

Throw the radio out, the motor sound's better! Well at least to me

Those engines were horribly inefficient. Most aftermarket add-ons will only serve to worsen your mileage woes.

Advancing the cam timing on a 351M/400 will help mileage and power more than any aftermarket add-on. I think you'd be pretty impressed how much power you can gain as well as improvement in economy.

It won't crank when warm? Or will crank but won't start?

Won't crank could be bad stater, bad cables or loose/corroded connections. Will crank but won't start could be purculation. I solved that in my 390 with a plastic 1" carb spacer.

It will turn but I need to hold the throttle all of the way open to get her to fire. I'll try the spacer.

Marty where did you fine your spacer? Autozone and NAPA don't list them on their web sites. My engine is a 351M 2V

If it runs fine otherwise, I'd say it's a purculation problem. The hot engine boils the gas in the carb, causing flooding as the motor sits. A plastic carb spacer keeps the carb cooler and the problem is stopped.

I got my 4v spacer from Jegs for about $20 - not sure about 2v. Be sure to get a plastic one.

Check with the Cleveland engine forum for your 351M engine improvements. There is a lot of info there that can be found with the search function or just plain looking thru the threads.

Moroso also makes a thin heat shield to go between the carb and intake
