Hey guys, I'm about going nuts trying to find this thumping noise under my 02 F-250. Its a crew cab with a Power Stroke and I hate to go to the dealer unless its something really bad. Love this truck, but I have a noise sounds like its something hitting the floorpan up under the truck. Its a non metallic rattle and it does this on smooth roads. It seems to have nothing to do with steering or braking. I found a loose inner fender rivet and popped it tight, drilled a new hole and even added a rivet. Layed under this truck for a half hour yanking everything in sight. Don't laugh at this, but I even put the truck in low and had my wife walk beside the truck trying to isolate the area. She says its near the passenger side firewall area. It all started on a very rough road, I started hearing it. Thanks for any ideas what to check..
OK Yeti, I guess its time to jack it up and check that stuff. It's driving me nuts when I can't figure noises out. I don't know if a hub would do that ya think? Let me know how to check the slip yoke. Thanks
Well, the slip yoke is on the end of your driveshaft, it moves as your suspension moves, that way you don't wreck your Tcase or diff yokes. Best thing to do is drop your shaft, pull the slip yoke off, grease the splines and re assemble.
Just make sure you put it back on the exact way it came off, that way your shaft won't be out of phase.
Make a mark on the shaft and yoke so it goes back together the same way....
Thanks lg3rd, I keep crawling under there and checking stuff, but never checked the ball joints. I read someplace where some guys had trouble with them at low mileage on the Super Duty's. I'll give them a check, thanks again....
SO when you are checking your ball joints.. you jack it up and use a pip to lift the tire to check for movement.. how much movement or play are we talking about here? Will it be noticable when one is bad?
I think thats my problem, there is a little play in the lower R.F. Is it hard to change ball joints on a Super Duty? I've done them on older cars, resto projects, but never on a bigger pickup. Hate to go to the dealer, ya know what I mean?
if the ball joint isn't the problem did you notice if the noise happened when the heating or ac was turned on at times the blend doors in the heater box will make a thump sound when the system is turned on it is normal for this to happen from time to time
I bought a used F-250 and it had a thumping noise from the front end. I found the shock bolts had worn just a small amount and that was enough to make them rattle on the smallest of bumps. I don't understand the design of shock mounts where the bolt goes through a C-bracket on the frame and the shock has a bushing in it. It seems to me that this design will rattle no matter what. I added weld and ground down my shock bolts so that they fit snug but they still turn. Sounds like new truck.
