straight six is the best design of an engine you can get. I beat the living **** out of my 78 300, it knocked, had low oil pressure, but it always wanted more. Ran her dry 10 miles and added more oil, runs the same way it did before. 300 is the toughest motor ford produced, and i think with current technologies, the 300 could replace the 5.4.

Your signature said""John Deere Green""?? I want to see a picture of that...
It won't return mostly because it's hard to make a 40 year old engine meet new standards for emissions and people are too focused on having a fast truck with big horsepower numbers.
Takeing the 4.2 out of the 04 was just a good idea regardless of what they put in.
they're makin way for the new natty diesel...but ford needs to bring back the 300...possibly with a better breathing head, little better cam and revised comp/fuel system...that'll make for a nice 200hp/320ish lb ft motor...only a dream though
but if they do, they'll kill it by adding OHC and raise the power band to a useless 3000+ RPM...

thats very true. they wan to be able to say, "my truck has more horsepower than yours and is .2 seconds faster in the quater mile." not realizing that its low end torque that matters whe you want to haul, not quater mile times. the 4.6 has hp peaks close to 5k rpms and torque peaks at 3500 rpms. its almost like a ricer. if they brought back the 300 the window sticker would read 150 horsepower. 150 hp doesn't sell trucks. most people dont even look at torque. look at the big rigs: some of them only have about 300 horsepower, but the have something like 1500 foot-pounds of torque.
fuggadaboutit. They can have all these new trucks. I'll stick with pre 1997 F150s with inline sixes. Better looking trucks anyway. If they come out with a new inline you can be sure it will be OHC. Man, I'd rather have a flathead. Give me a 1950 with the inline flathead six (but wait till I retire so I won't be in a hurry to get anywhere ). For now I'll keep on drivin my '95.

At 16 my first vehicle was a 1949 F-1 with the flathead 6 and a three speed floor shift. "Upgrade" then was a 4 speed from an F-3. I remember the four speed had a "Thumb" lever on the shifter handle that had to be pulled up to go into reverse.
I think today of the way I treated that truck then And I kick myself ..
6.00x16 tires
Brake Master Cylinder under the drivers floorboard as I recall.....
At 45 MPH in 4th it sounded like you where doing 95 1st would not keep up with an old man walking!!!!
I've said it before and I'll say it again. Truck engines like the 300 are gone forever, or at least until trucks aren't popular for soccer moms and everyone else on the planet. If you want a usable truck you have to buy a Super Duty diesel. Other than the heavy duty models trucks are not built anymore. They might as well call them Rancheros and El Caminos because all they are is car chassis with truck bodies on them. As was said before, HP sells trucks. As a result they have no low end torque, so they need 3.73 or 4.10 gears just to haul themselves around empty, never mind with a load. With those gears the mileage goes to hell. It's funny really. Mileage has steadily increased on cars built with new engine technology, but has stayed the same or maybe even dropped with new engines in trucks.
