Hey guys... 86 f150 straight 6 4x4. The gas gauge dont work for either of my gas tanks... I would guess that all I need to do is replace the sending unti from both tanks. Is that correct? Could there be something else. The gauge jumps back and forth depending on how much gas is in the tank. Do i need to drop the tank to replace this? Is it worth the trouble? I have a system that works so i dont run out of gas but to be able to look at the gauge would be better..
Thanks for the Info

could be just a loose connection to if the gauge jumps but most likely its the sending uint. On my truck i replaced them with out droping the tank. mine also has a flatbody that gives more room then just a standard truck tho. theres a hole in the top of the tank were yar lines go in. theres a ring around this hole that ya twist with a ahmemr and screw driver then ya can lift out the plug if ya will this is yar sending uint and fuel line pickup. Least on my truck wich is diesle but i am pretty sure the gas tanks are about the same.
I would check all of wiring connections, and wires for any breaks just to be sure, but it is probably the sending unit.
You might be able to get to the sending unit without dropping the tank, or removing the bed, but I don't think so.
I've heard of people running into problems when dropping the tanks due to old worn out straps and such. Things like the strap breaking and having to replace it and things like that.
You might be better off pulling the bed off. I'm going to have mine off getting it ready to paint, so I'll probably replace my sending units then.
Warning, those things ain't cheap! So far the best price I have found is about $115.00.
I would have a hard time believing that the sending units in both tanks went bad at the same time. You probably have either a bad electrical connection or the small voltage regulator located on the back side of the instrument panel is bad.
Thanks Guys... Sounds like its not worth the effort... at least not right now. I will get to it someday but for now I will just keep counting the miles to my next fill up.
Thanks for all the help
